It’s a great time of year to think about home updates and to home improvements. In that light, here’s a look at historic and famous Portland homes to get inspired by:
1. The first, and likely most famous of the historic homes is the Pittock Mansion. This is an easy one to visit. This is a very eclectic architectural design built by Portland pioneers Henry and Georgiana Pittock.
It’s got a very distinctive roof, fantastic architectural style, and is commands a fantastic view.
2. The Watzek House in Northwest Portland was designed by architect John Yeon, and built for lumber baron Aubrey Watzek. The home is is a Northwest regional style of modernism with clear fir tongue and grove siding, stacked fieldstone foundation, a minimal eave line, and more.
3. Mackenzie House (now the William Temple House) in Northwest Portland was designed by Whidden & Lewis. It’s built in a Richardsonian Romanesque style with trademark medieval-inspired stone arches, cone-topped turret, and wrought-iron details.
4. M. Lloyd Frank Estate in the Lewis and Clark College Campus. This was designed by Herman Brookman for department store heir – M. Lloyd Frank. It’s a classic pre-Depression mix of opulence and eclecticism.
5. Saul Zaik House in Northwest Portland was designed by Saul Zaik himself. It’s a modernistic, simple home with warm and clean lines and uses local wood.
These are just some of the historic homes that surround us here in Portland.
