It’s getting darker earlier in the day, sometimes it’s dark by the time you get home from work.  So, how do you monopolize on the light you do have – and how can you make your home brighter?  Here are five tips for brightening up your home and monopolizing on the light you get this winter:Skylight

Tip#1: Get a skylight installed.  If your home is darker than you’d like – and you don’t want to install new windows or change the general format of your home, skylights are a great idea for adding natural light to your home.  Not only are they great for letting light in, there are types of skylights which open – so you can air out your home between rain storms.

Tip #2: Hang your string lights. Check out our article on how to hang string lights outdoors.  You can hang string lights inside too for that festive look.

Tip #3: Clean your windows – inside and out.  If you haven’t cleaned your windows in a while, you might be surprised at how dirty they are and how much light they will allow in once they are cleaned.  Just be sure to clean your roof and gutters first – if those are getting cleaned this year.  Otherwise all the work you did on your windows will be ruined from the run off.Chilly day

Tip #4: Try a variety of lighting fixtures and pieces.  You don’t have to do a full remodel to get a dark room brightened up, just add a few lamps and position them all around the room to make the whole room glow.

Tip # 5: Decorate with bright or light colors.  Bring in brightly colored flowers, go for seasonal decorations in silver or gold, and use bright throw rugs and pillows to dress up darker furniture.

This year, don’t let the weather get you down.  Brighten up your home utilizing all types of techniques.
